Byron Andrew Johnson of Battle Creek, MI

Byron, age 95, died October 6, 2016, at his residence and in the presence of his loving family.

Byron, the son of John and Mable (Butterfield) Johnson, was born in Muskegon, MI on June 13, 1921, and moved to the Battle Creek area from Kalamazoo, MI in 1995. He was a graduate of Ravenna High School, Ravenna, MI and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Michigan State University. Byron served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II obtaining the rank of Captain, in the United States Army Air Corp. After the war, Byron was employed as a Research Chemist for the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo and retired in 1986 after 40+ years. Byron was a true gentleman and family man. He had a very inquisitive mind and his scope of interest was diverse. He was interested in cultural and current events. He also had the ability of a skilled handyman. Byron had a welcoming nature and was interested in everyone's pursuits!

Byron was united in marriage to Edna Jeanette Clark in 1946. While she was stricken with Alzheimer's for the last 10 years of her life, Byron was her sole in-home caregiver. She died in 2003. Byron was then wed to Betty Kershner on July 23, 2006, in Battle Creek and she survives. Also surviving are his three sons, Glenn A. Johnson, of Chicago, IL, Dr. Clark P. (Mary) Johnson, of Battle Creek and Gregg E. (Dawn) Johnson, of Ft. Wayne, IN; two stepchildren, Angela (Rick) Brush of Bellevue, MI and Robert (Erin) Kershner of Niceville, FL, four grandchildren, Eric (Lisa) Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Lauren (Kevin) Witt, and Michelle Johnson; six step grandchildren; two great grandchildren, Natalie Johnson and Jackson Witt, and his brother, Kenneth (Joyce) Johnson of N. Muskegon, MI.

A Private, Family Graveside Service will be held in Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens, Battle Creek. Memorial contributions in Byron's honor may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association-Michigan Chapter, 350 East Michigan Avenue, Suite 20, Kalamazoo, MI 49007 or Bronson @ Home Hospice Care, 165 Washington Avenue, North, Battle Creek, MI 49037. The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek is assisting Byron's family with his arrangements.
