Joseph Henry "Joe" Blaskie, Jr. of Battle Creek, MI

Joe, age 97, died Friday morning January 20, 2017 at his residence and with his loving family at his side.

Joe, the son of Joseph H. and Mary (Kubiak) Blaskie, Sr., was born in Detroit, MI on February 27, 1919 and was a graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School of Coldwater, MI. He served his Country honorably and nobly during World War II in the United States Army as a Sergeant with the 126th Infantry (Awarded his Combat Infantry Badge) in the South Pacific Theater. Joe was an auto body mechanic, first owning his own shop and then working for Smith's Auto Body Shop. He also worked for his brother at Burt's Glass Shop and finally retiring in 1994. Joe was a member of St. Philip Roman Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus, Third Degree having joined in Saugatuck, MI and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed camping with their motor home, hunting and fishing. Almost every weekend possible, he went to Saugatuck to fish off their boat on the Big Lake, Lake Michigan.

Joe was united in marriage to the former Joyce M. Orrison in Middleville, MI on April 15, 1972. Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Joyce; four sons, Steven Blaskie of Phoenix, AZ, David Blaskie of Ann Arbor, MI, Dan (Deanna) Blaskie and Ken Blaskie, both of Battle Creek ; several grandchildren; a step-daughter, Kathy (Gary) Townsley of Cincinnati, OH; his sister, Ann Cuendent of Coldwater, MI and several nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and four brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 25th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church, 92 Capital Avenue, NE, Battle Creek with Father Robert Johanson, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with the United States Army Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full military honors. Joe's family will greet friends on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until Mass Time in the Church Vestibule. The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek is assisting Joe's family with his arrangements.
